Easy Crochet Pocket Shawl

Pattern Notes & Stitch Guide

  • Yarn & Hook: Bulky weight yarn (approx. 500 g total) worked with an 8.0 mm crochet hook to keep the fabric soft, flexible, and drapey.

  • Finished Measurements:

    • Shawl Body: ~48 cm (19 in) wide × 180 cm (71 in) long

    • Pockets (Make 2): ~28 cm (11 in) wide × 32 cm (12.5 in) tall

  • Back Loop Only (BLO): Work every double crochet into the back loop / horizontal back bar of the stitch unless otherwise indicated. This prevents the fabric from becoming overly stiff and creates subtle texture lines.

  • Turning Chain: Ch 3 counts as the first DC across all rows.

  • Crossed Double Crochet (CrDC):

    1. Skip the next stitch.

    2. Work 1 DC (BLO) into the following stitch.

    3. Yarn over, cross back in front, and work 1 DC (BLO) into the skipped stitch.

Part 1: Main Shawl Body

The shawl body is worked across 45 stitches:

  • Right Border: 9 stitches (3 sets of CrDC separated by individual DCs)

  • Center Section: 27 plain DCs

  • Left Border: 9 stitches (3 sets of CrDC separated by individual DCs)

Foundation Chain

  • Chain 45 loosely (plus 3 turning chains; 48 chains total). Keep your tension very relaxed to avoid a tight, curving edge.

Row 1 (Foundation DC Row)

  • Work 1 DC into the back bump of the 4th chain from your hook (the 3 skipped chains count as your first DC).

  • Work 1 DC into the back bump of every chain across.

  • Stitch Count: 45 DC. Turn.

Row 2 (Pattern Setup)

  • Ch 3 (counts as first DC).

  • Right Border (9 sts):

    1. Skip next st, 1 DC (BLO) in next st, 1 DC (BLO) back into skipped st (first CrDC pair).

    2. 1 DC (BLO) in next st.

    3. Skip next st, 1 DC (BLO) in next st, 1 DC (BLO) back into skipped st (second CrDC pair).

    4. 1 DC (BLO) in next st.

    5. Skip next st, 1 DC (BLO) in next st, 1 DC (BLO) back into skipped st (third CrDC pair).

  • Center Section (27 sts):

    • Work 1 DC (BLO) in each of the next 27 stitches across until 9 stitches remain.

  • Left Border (9 sts):

    1. Skip next st, 1 DC (BLO) in next st, 1 DC (BLO) back into skipped st (first CrDC pair).

    2. 1 DC (BLO) in next st.

    3. Skip next st, 1 DC (BLO) in next st, 1 DC (BLO) back into skipped st (second CrDC pair).

    4. 1 DC (BLO) in next st.

    5. Skip next st, 1 DC (BLO) in next st, 1 DC (BLO) back into skipped st (third CrDC pair).

    6. 1 DC into the 3rd chain of the turning chain at the end of the row.

  • Stitch Count: 45 stitches (6 CrDC pairs, 33 regular DC). Turn.

Row 3 to Length (~180 cm)

  • Ch 3, turn.

  • Work the 9-stitch border over the first 9 stitches, stacking the CrDC pairs directly over the CrDC pairs from the previous row.

  • Work 1 DC (BLO) across the center 27 stitches.

  • Work the 9-stitch border over the final 9 stitches.

  • Repeat this row until the body measures approximately 180 cm in length. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Part 2: Pockets (Make 2)

Base Ribbed Section

  • Chain loosely until the chain measures approximately 28 cm wide.

  • Row 1: DC into the 4th chain from hook and in each chain across. Turn.

  • Rows 2–12: Ch 3 (counts as DC), work 1 DC (BLO) in each stitch across to the turning chain. (Total: 12 rows of DC). Do not fasten off.

Transition Row

  • Turn the piece 90 degrees to work along the raw side edges.

  • Ch 3, work 2 DC into the side edge of each row, adding 1 to 2 extra DCs evenly spaced in the middle to prevent tension pulling (total approx. 25–27 DCs across). Turn.

Upper Crossed-Stitch Section

  • Rows 1–4: Ch 3, work [CrDC, 1 DC] across the entire width of the pocket, ending with 1 DC in the final stitch. Turn.

  • Row 5: Ch 3, work 1 DC (BLO) in every stitch across to finish the top edge.

Pocket Edging

  1. Sides and Bottom: Ch 1, work single crochets (SC) evenly around the three raw edges (2 SC per row space along the sides, 1 SC per stitch along the bottom), placing 2 to 3 SC in each corner for neat turning.

  2. Top Opening: Work a neat row of slip stitches (or SC) across the top opening to add structural firmness and prevent stretching.

  3. Fasten off, leaving a long tail (approx. 1 meter) for sewing.

Part 3: Assembly & Placement

  1. Positioning: Lay the shawl flat. Place each pocket approximately 1 row up from the short edge, centered horizontally between the side panels so there is an even margin of 2 plain DCs between the pocket edge and the 9-stitch crossed borders.

  2. Securing: Pin all three edges securely in place with stitch markers or craft pins.

  3. Sewing:

    • Thread the long yarn tail onto a tapestry needle.

    • Whipstitch or mattress stitch through the single crochet border on the sides and bottom, following the straight vertical DC stitch lines on the shawl body to keep the seam clean and straight.

    • Leave the top edge open.

  4. Repeat: Position and attach the second pocket on the opposite end in the exact same manner.

  5. Finishing: Weave in all loose ends on the wrong side.
